This is good for when you intend to use art of things which already exist. But in order to make original art (that is, images which have not been created and have important details which you won’t be able to find on any pre-existing image collection) with low budget the only viable option is AI. Collections of images are limited, but AI (and people) allow for boundless posibilities of images to match what one is especifically looking for in the image.
This argument above isn’t a moral one, just an examination of facts. You can still declare that AI is morally wrong and still agree with me on this.
Agree to disagree on the case of AI. Art is a job like any other and people making it deserve to be paid. AI rip off the hard work of those people to make flavorless art. The Reddit thread seems pretty antagonistic towards artists by calling them bourgeois with delusions and shit. An image on the internet does not equal public domain and usable by everyone for free (including to feed AI), they are protected by copyright laws. If you don't have the means to buy original art, nothing stops you from putting placeholder art temporarily.
There are very affordable artists out there doing really cool things, so at this point IDK. Unfortunately, it's like everything else, if you don't have the means for something, you are not entitled to a way to have it for free because YOU don't have the money. Placeholder art and early access are there to feed your project and allow you to add unique art to it! If your project is cool people will finance it and help you. If you are open to it you can even learn how to draw and it's an infinite well of free art!

You gave me 5 stars on one of my projects to compensate for some jerk giving me 1 star for an AI cover image (despite saying I have no artistic talent myself and having ZERO other artwork).

Have you considered adding another Quebec GLBTQ+ artist that releases LOTS of free resources?
Dyson Logos has well over 500 free maps for TTRPG use and is constantly adding more to the collection, and some include illustrations.

As a side point, I myself think that it’s not wrong to use AI in a moral sense.
